Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil el-Sisi (Arabic: عبد الفتاح سعيد حسين خليل السيسي Abdu l-Fattāḥ Sa'īd Ḥusayn Khalīl as-Sīsī, IPA: [ʕæbdel.fætˈtæːħ sæˈʕiːd ħeˈseːn xæˈliːl esˈsiːsi]; born November 19th, 1954 - ). He is commonly known as Sisi, is the sixth and incumbent President of Egypt, in office since June 2014. As chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces, Sisi launched the 2013 Egyptian coup d ' 'état that removed President Mohamed Morsi from office in the aftermath of the June 2013 Egyptian protests. Two months later, troops loyal to Sisi began a bloody crackdown against protesters and dissidents–later to be dubbed the August 2013 Rabaa massacre–that left 1,400 dead and 16,000 detained. In the wake of violence, Sisi installed an interim government, but remained Egypt's Minister of Defence and assumed the role of the country's First Deputy Prime Minister.
On March 26th, 2014, he resigned from his military post, announcing that he would run as a candidate in the 2014 presidential election. The election, held between May 26th and May 28th, and which included only one opponent, was boycotted by most political parties and the Muslim Brotherhood and resulted in Sisi winning the presidency with more than 93% of the vote. Sisi was sworn into office as President of Egypt on June 8th, 2014. Sisi's government has given the Egyptian military unchecked power, and some media reports have labeled him a dictator and a strongman, comparing him to Egypt's former dictators.
According to the Human Rights Watch, Sisi's regime has used torture and enforced disappearances against his political opponents and criminal suspects. The military committed extrajudicial killings in its campaign against Wilayah Sayna, an ISIS affiliate in North Sinai. In addition to prosecutions, travel bans and asset freezes against human rights defenders, and repressive new legislation that threaten to kill the independent civil society. There have also been reports of war crimes being committed in the Sinai region as part of the ongoing insurgency against various militant Islamist and jihadist organizations in the area.
Sisi has also forged alliances with dictators Bashar al-Assad of neighboring Syria and Vladimir Putin of Russia. He has also provided aid to Saudi Arabia in their ongoing involvement in the Yemeni Civil War.
