We were just one little tiny shop on Sydney Rd that was trying to carve out a swathe of space to prioritise women, and suddenly we became the punching bag of Melbourne and the internet.

Handsome Her Eatery was a vegan restaurant in Melbourne, Australia that discriminated against men.

History

Handsome Her Eatery was opened by a feminist lesbian named Alex O'Brien in 2017. The restaurant caused controversy by giving women customers priority over male customers. It also charged men eighteen percent more than women, supposedly to reflect the heavily debated gender pay gap. This so-called "man tax" led to outrage on social media, with one user describing O'Brien and her wife as "horrible people".

Despite this, Handsome Her's business was relatively good until April 2019, when O'Brien announced on Twitter that the restaurant was closing down. However, she refused to say why, instead branding men's rights activists who opposed the man tax "misogynists". Many Twitter users showed their support for the restaurant for its support of the feminist movement, but most condemned it and applauded its closure.
